Love animals? Looking for somewhere to volunteer? Alive Rescue, a no-kill shelter originally in Lakeview but about to open a new larger facility in the West Loop, has saved over 900 animals since it opened in 2008. It's a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization with an amazing group of volunteers.

Many of the dogs saved have special needs. Some are seniors. Others have serious health issues. Alive gets them as healthy as possible and finds fosters, then hopefully, loving homes for them. I've been volunteering there for 5 years and currently head up the Reach Out Program where we take our pups to visit at assisted living facilities. And I consider myself blessed to take part with my Alive rescue and BFF, Charley.
